Mi Gente Voices: ¡Bienvenidxs!

Updated: May 22

A community blog for and by mi gente!

A collage made up of 25 faces. Men and women are shown with smiles. Some are clapping, using peace signs, and some people have microphones.
A collage of mi gente over the years
The historia of yourself, your familia, and your ancestors has shaped every moment of your existencia — in ways both tangible y escondidas. If you’ve landed here, entonces we already share algo en común: a voice from the past is calling you, whispering, acuérdate de mí…

It is through sharing, learning, and remembering our historias that we figure out quién somos and where we come from. Those of us with roots in Spanish speaking countries and lineage to the Latine diaspora, who carry the stories of Mi Gente, sabemos bien the forces that have tried to erase nuestra voz and our people.

But here we are. Somos el eco de our abuelitas' prayers, the rhythm in our tías’ laugh, and the pride that pulses through every step we take pa’lante.

It is our sacred respeto y amor for our cultura that brings people together — to uplift our comunidad and reclaim our narratives.

Mi Gente Mi Pueblo was born in 2020 with a bold deseo: to amplify the presence and power of Latine communities too often pushed to the margins, silenced, or forgotten.

Through our projects — like Movida and Reclamando — Mi Gente leans into the poder of the arts for healing, expression, celebration, and forging a clear and inclusive camino toward a future filled with abundance, justicia, and belonging.

Now, we’re opening up our next espacio: this blog.

Mi Gente Voices is a digital plaza — a communal vessel for storytelling, reflection, and truth-telling. Here, we’ll explore preguntas personales, locales e históricas that speak to our sanación, our alegría, and our shared growth.

So, ¿quién es this blog for?

It’s for our gente — those who know what it’s like to carry multiple homes in their heart. It’s for anyone who’s ever asked, "¿De dónde soy, really?" It’s for the storytellers, the healers, the curious jóvenes, the tías chismosas with the tea, and the ancianos who hold entire worlds in their memory.

What can you expect here? Personal essays. Oral history. Poesía. Interviews. Recipes. Neighborhood snapshots. Stories que nos hacen reír, llorar, pensar, y sentir. This is a blog by and for la comunidad, shaped by you, for you.

How often will we publish? We're aiming for bi-monthly posts — sometimes more, sometimes less — depending on what’s flowing in the community. What matters most is that it stays rooted, real, and relevant.

Why stories? Because it’s our invisible threads that connect us to home. And home can be a place we’ve never known, a country we had to leave behind, or a collage de casitas we’ve built in all the places our feet have taken us.

It’s our elders, our abuelxs, our tías y tíos, our primos y primas who let us taste our cultura — through empanadas, tamales, tajín sprinkled on mango, y tacos bien picosos. It’s feeling excited and anxious to learn Spanish as an adult. It’s our pueblito’s slang, our Spanglish, our bilingual dreams, that shape how we speak ourselves into existence. And now it’s us — nosotrxs — who must tell our stories to each other. Especially to the next generation we are nourishing now.
